Tom taught at Park High School in Cottage Grove from 1967 through 2001, leading the concert band, jazz band, and marching band. In addition to freelance performing in the Twin Cities, he played bass trombone in the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra from 1969 through 1975. In the 1960's Tom played bass trombone in the Blue Diamonds Jazz Orchestra and Bob Bailey's trombone quartet. In 2003, Tom joined the Minneapolis Trombone Choir, and he has often shared in the conducting duties for the choir's concerts. He currently plays bass trombone with the Red Rock Swing Band and is music director and trombonist with the Band of Praise (www.bandofpraise.com), a traditional New Orleans-style Dixieland funeral band.

Tom first performed with the Roseville Big Band on the June 15, 2004, concert in Central Park.
